49er Report
Sailing Sunday through Wednesday in Kingston
Ontario Canada Spring Lake Sailors Chad Hough and David Fox
obtained a podium finish in the 49er class at the CORK
Regatta.
15 races were sailed. Chad and David along with
fellow American sailors Scott Ikle and Tim Waldow dominated
the regatta. The two American skiffs won all but 2 of the
races.
Ikle and Wadlow won races 3,4,6,7,8,13 and 14. Chad
and David won races 1,2,5,9,10, and 12.
The deciding factor that put them 2nd rather than
1st was a bit of a slow finish. In races 14&15 they finished
2nd and 3rd while Ikle and Waldow were 1st and 2nd.
Still and all a promising result as they prepare
for the USA 49er Olympic trails in Florida in October.

Great Lakes 70's 1999 Season Concludes

Chicago NOOD Regatta (June 11-13) - Light airs greeted
the GL70 class for its 1999 season opening regatta. The
boats sailing on the left or east side of the course had
the most success.
Bert D'Ottavio's Thirsty Tiger won the regatta.
Terry Kohler/Peter Riechelsdorfer's Cynosure was a close
second and John Nedeau's Windancer was third.
The highlight of the regatta was the Spinnaker
finish on a final up wind leg when a monstrous squall line
arrived and turned the wind 180o and increased the wind to
the 25-30 knot range.

Chicago Mac (July 10-12) - The GL70 class start of the
92nd Chicago to Mackinac race found rare upwind, heavy air
conditions awaiting them. The boats that slugged their way
through the heavy seas to the Michigan shore on the first
day and night made out handily. Boats that got into the
easterly flow of wind on Sunday morning off the Michigan
coastline, made out, while the middle of the Lake boats
sat becalmed.
The race along the Michigan shore was more typical
for the Chicago Mac with downwind gibing angles becoming
an important factor as the winds clocked from east to southwest.
From there on it was a game of follow the leader as
Dick Jennings' Pied Piper kept Peter Thornton's Holua and
Terry Kohler/Peter Riechelsdorfer's Cynosure a safe distance
behind the rest of the way - even over the last 5 windless
miles from the Bridge to the finish. The final finish for
the Great Lakes 70 class had Dick Jennings' Pied Piper first,
Paul Sammann's Blondie correcting into second, Peter Thornton's
Holua third and Terry Kohler/Peter Riechelsdorfer's Cynosure
fourth.

Port Huron Mac (July 17-19) - Mother Nature added
a little excitement to the GL70 class start of the 75th
annual Port Huron to Mackinac race. The 10 GL70's started
the PH-Mac at the peak of a 30-knot squall. The Terry
Kohler/Peter Riechelsdorfer's Cynosure lost their mast
immediately after the start. After the exciting squall line
start it was all downhill with winds variable and light to
moderate.
After Cove Island the winds continued to be light
and variable - however mostly upwind, with numerous
opportunities to gain or lose ground. A number of boats
found themselves dodging the Duck Islands to get down the
course.
John Nedeau's Windancer was able to stay close to
the rest of the class through the second half of the race
and finish before the wind died to correct over the class/fleet.
Final Class and IMS overall finishes were John Nedeau's
Windancer-first, Dick Jennings' Pied Piper -second and
Bill Martin's Stripes - third.

Bay Harbor Yacht Club Regatta (July 22-23) - The
tone of the regatta was set in the 1st race when a number
of boats were left "out to dry" on the right side of the
1st beat. Those boats found themselves almost a leg behind
after 1 lap and a race behind in a 2 race regatta.
The most consistent boats, Dick Jennings' Pied Piper
( 1, 1 ) and Terry Kohler/Peter Riechelsdorfer's Cynosure
(five days after losing their mast) ( 3, 3 )were first and
second in the 10-boat fleet. Newcomer Jeff Monger/Mike Buklo's
Mirage took third for the regatta with second and a sixth.
The Friday race was abandoned due to 50-knot squall
lines moving across the northern part of Lake Michigan.

Chicago Yacht Club Verve Cup Regatta (August 13-15) - The
regatta had a little of everything for the nine boat GL70
class. The results of this regatta also determined the
final standings for the Great Lakes 70's Season Championship.
Friday's races, sailed in gusty westerly winds off the city
had Terry Kohler/Peter Riechelsdorfer's Cynosure and Dick
Jennings' Pied Piper fighting for the top spot but having
Jeff Monger/Mike Buklo's Mirage and Bill Alcott's Equation
each grab a first.
    Terry Kohler/Peter Riechelsdorfer's Cynosure held
off Dick Jennings' Pied Piper in each race to get two 2nd
's for the day.
The Race Committee due to extreme conditions caused
by the northerly winds and high waves abandoned Saturday's
races.
Sunday's races, sailed in light to moderate easterly
breezes, were controlled by Dick Jennings' Pied Piper with
2 firsts. Jeff Monger/Mike Buklo's Mirage and Bill Alcott's
Equation, continuing with their consistent racing, came in
second and third respectively for the regatta. Terry Kohler
/Peter Riechelsdorfer's Cynosure lost their touch of speed
to drop to fourth for the regatta.
Dick Jennings' Pied Piper sailed a consistent
series with scores of 3, 3, 1, and 1 to win the Verve Cup
and the GL70 seasons Championship.
Final results for the 1999 GL70 Season Championship
were Dick Jennings' Pied Piper - first, Terry Kohler/Peter
Riechelsdorfer's Cynosure - second and Paul Sammann's
Blondie - third with John Nedeau's Windancer 2 points
and Bert D'Ottavio's Thirsty Tiger 5 ½ points out of third.
The year 2000 looks to be another exciting year for
the Great Lakes 70's. Currently 11 boats strong - two to
three additional boats are expected to compete.

1999 Figaro Solo Concludes
This one design offshore solo competition concluded
with the final leg sailing from Bayona Spain north to
Douarnenez France a distance of 445 miles.
The early leader of the leg was Gildas Morvan.
During the leg Irish sailor Damian Foxall commented on the
extreme measures Figaro sailors go to: "I've been awake
for now over 48 hours, and am searching for the extra bouts
of energy to keep going on sail changes between spinnaker
and genoa."
By Saturday the 21st the leaders had reached the
finish at Douarnenez. Gildas Morvan had held his early
lead and ended up the Leg 3 winner by slightly more than
an hour over Jean Le Cam.
Le Cam's 2nd place capped his performance as
overall winner. This is Le Cam's 3rd Figaro win. This ties
him with Philippe Poupon for most Figaro triumphs.
Le Cam's other wins were in 1994 & 1996.
After 3 legs and 1356 miles of offshore one design
solo sailing Le Cam edged Eric Drouglazet by 1 hour 53
minutes and 50 seconds. Leg 3 winner Gildas Morvan snatched
the 3rd podium spot finishing up 3 hours 44 minutes and 43
seconds out of 1st.
Below find the final podium lineups for the
1999 Figaro Solo for the 3 legs and the overall placings.
Leg 1 1st Le Cam 2nd Ellies 3rd Bidegorry
Leg 2 1st Droglazet 2nd Le Cam
Leg 3 1st Morvan 2nd Le Cam 3rd Josse
Overall 1st Le Cam 2nd Drouglazet 3rd Morvan

New Match Racing World Champion
The annual Cottonfield Cup served as the venue of
the World Championship of match racing. Waters off Denmark
were the venue for 10 of top 11 ranked match racers to face
off mano a mano.
Appropriately enough the new match racing world
champion is Danish Sailor Jesper Bank. Bank edged Frenchman
Bertrand Pace in an abbreviated one-race final. Only one
race was sailed due to very light air.
Bank gained the finals by soundly defeating defending
champion Peter Gilmour. Pace beat Sten Mohr in the other
semifinal.
The rest of the order of finish was as follows:
3rd Gilmour, 4th Mohr, 5th Magnus Holmberg, 6th Markus Wieser,
7th Dean Barker, 8th Chris Law, 9th Morten Henriksen
10th Jochan Schuman
