Around Alone Report February 25- How tough has this race been ?

While in lead Somewhere dismasted

Here is an update on the status of the 15 boats that started Around Alone September 26 in Charleston.  8 boats remain racing, but only 2 from Class I.  7 boats have withdrawn.  Somewhere will head to the Falkland Islands and attempt to replace her mast and continue racing.  If this can't be accompished Somewhere will be the races 8th withdrawal. The reasons for withdrawal have been: capsized, 2 dismastings, fuel tank problems, boom gooseneck failure, navigational error and 1 boat missed the start deadline.

How does this compare to past Around Alones ?  It is clear from the table below that this race has the highest drop out rate of any of the races.  In particular Class I with some the most advanced and expensive boats is down to a single boat left.  Seems as though the learning curve of this race has not yet been mastered.  In addition the statemnet you can't win what you don't finish has never been more clearly demonstrated.
