Excerpt from the Torresen Sailing Site Interview with
Mike Garside

Torresen Sailing Site: What qualities as a sailor do you possess that make you feel you can win the race ?

mag1.jpg (6556 bytes)Single minded determination, stamina and a fanatical attention to detail.

Torresen Sailing Site: In the light of past Open Class capsizings how do you feel about your boat's stability ?

mag1.jpg (6556 bytes)Magellan Alpha was the first post-Vendee boat to be designed and built. In fact we were designing her last April when the race was still very fresh in everyone's mind. New safety features include a curved deck to stop an upside down boat acting like a raft, a canting keel which can be operated from inside so that it can be used to force the boat back upright in the event of a capsize - that's a technique  that Isabelle Autissier used successfully - and the mast is sealed and buoyant.

Torresen Sailing Site: Do you plant to take a library of books along ?

mag1.jpg (6556 bytes)No. Whoever heard of a marathon runner reading while he was running or a boxer reading between
rounds. I think they are the two sports which have the most similarities to single handed ocean racing.
