Torresen Sailing Site: Why have French sailors historically dominated
around the world open class racing ? What can British, American, Russian etc.
sailors do to break this ? Do you expect to see the dominance end this race ?
The
French love their sailing heroes and the sport has a high profile in France. The
romance of single handed sailing captured the imagination of the public there. It means
French skippers have been able to get the funding they need. If the British can come
up with the right boats and the right level of sponsorship, there's no reason why we
can't win.
The French haven't got anything we haven't got. There are three Brits in three new
French boats this time with the sole aim of proving that fact. There is a new
enthusiasm for the sport in Britain now, especially after Mark Turner and Ellen
MacArthur's success in the mini-Transat and Ellen's announcement of her plans for the
Vendee. They are encouraging a lot of other youngsters into the sport.
I do expect to see the French dominance end with this race, partly because at the
moment there is only one French competitor, Isabelle Autissier. The French focus
(and the budgets) seems to have shifted towards the Vendee and The Race.
Torresen Sailing Site: Do you plant to take a
library of books along ?
No.
Whoever heard of a marathon runner reading while he was running or a boxer reading
between rounds. I think they are the two sports which have the most similarities to single
handed ocean racing.
Torresen Sailing Site: What plans do you have
involving the internet during the race?
We
already have a site which will be carrying daily updates on my
transatlantic warm up and that will continue to grow in the build up and throughout the
race. The site is: www.magellanline.co.uk
Torresen Sailing Site: What result, or action,
will make your campaign a success ?
A win
in Class 2.
