This edition of the Around Alone will see a resurgance of British entries.   Many of the early single-handed sailing feats were acheived by Britains.  More recently French sailors have dominated single-handed contest.  Now their is a revival and up to 9 United Kingdom/British boats could hit the Around Alone starting line.

One of these British sailors is Mike Garside.  Among his life experience Mike can count these roles:  former SAS officer, desert trucking manager and successful magazine publisher.  He has given up these to pursue victory in Around Alone competition.  Mike also has signifigant sailing experience.  He completed his circumnavigation in 1982.

Mike will sail  the race in a newly built Finot 50, Magellan Alpha.   Currently Mike is under sail in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.  This is part of his very thorough training system.  He left Cowes England on March 12th.   On March 22nd he reached the island of Madeira where he offloaded a crewmember who had sailed with him.  Currently (March 26th) Mike is near the Azores Islands and sent this report:  "Distance run 230miles, wind F3-6 NE. All OK. Beginning to get into a rhythm. Wind eased as expected."  For daily updates visit the Magellan Alpha website. Mike's destination is Charleston, South Carolina.  When he reaches Charleston he'll meet up with old sailing freind Robin Davie.  After doing some boatwork in Charleston he will head back across the Atlantic.  Next will be the Atlantic Alone race, starting in Falmouth on July 5th.

Torresen Sailing Site had a chance to interview Mike Garside.  He gave some very frank and honest answers.  When reading the interview, I think you'll come to see that Mike is a very serious, determined and prepared competitor.
