Around Alone Report May 11

Magellan will be 2nd Leg 4 winner

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

Likely by 1200 eastern today Magellan Alpha will cross the line and take the Leg 4 Class II victory.  Mike Garside has led right from the start.  His victory will make him only the 2nd British skipper to score a leg victory, and the first to both win a leg and post a victory.

Fleet Round Up:

Magellan Alpha is now 47 miles from Charleston.  Magellan is sailing at 9.1 knots in force 3 easterly breezes.

Cray Valley is 2nd by 229 miles.   J.P. Moulgine will take 2nd for the leg, but will be the overall Class II victor.   J.P. sums up his frustrations of leg 4: "In light air once you lose contact, coming back is nearly impossible unless the competition makes mistakes, and Mike has made none on this leg."  Ultimately though J.P. is satisfied especially with Cray Valley: "After more than 30,000 miles alone the boat keeps on amazing me with its performance. Last night in the cockpit under the stars, I kept on watching Cray Valley glide thru the water at nine knots with hardly a ripple on the ocean."  Cray Valley is expected to finish tomorrow nite.

Next is the first of the 40 foot Class II entries, Wind of Change.  Wind of Change is 877 miles back.

www.no-barriers.com has again moved up to 4th place.  No Barriers has a 14 mile lead on Shuten Dojhi.   Neal reports: "Conditions are light. Under spinnaker. Had 124 mile 24 hour run. Expect next 24 hrs to be slower."  Along with the achievement of passing Minoru Neal reports: "I should be able to eat a meal now everyday."

Shuten Dojhi II shows in 5th place 1661 miles back.  Shuten will need heavier air to move past No Barriers.

Balance Bar is 1670 miles back.

Paladin 2 is 1802 miles back.   Neil Hunter says, "Trades are just hanging in though they are very light."

has overtaken Paladin 2.   Her 9.4 knot speed is 2nd fastest of the remaining fleet.

is almost even with Paladin.  With a speed advantage Balance Bar could pass Paladin today.

What does it all mean ?

Mike Garside joins Mike Golding as the sole British sailors to win Around Alone legs.
