No Barriers Neal Petersen reports that much of his food supply has been destroyed. According to Neal this is what happened: "A food crate somehow broke, containing the supplies. All the rice and pasta for the rest of the trip was destroyed. I have a little left from this week's supply. The next two weeks of chocolate, biscuits and cereal [are gone]. I have eaten the last of my fresh fruit. The food that has survived are a few cans and 4 of Gwen's meals." Petersen is considering his options which range from dieting to stopping in port to resupply.
Fleet Round Up:
Fila's lead has shortened to 324 miles. Fila's speed is 7 knots, 4 less than her pursuer Somewhere. Likely Giovanni Soldini is in light air as reported winds in Fila's area are as low as 1 knot.
Somewhere is 4 knots faster and has gained 23 miles in the last 6 hours.
Magellan Alpha leads Class II by 249
miles 28 better than yesterday. Mike Garside thinks Magellan may have made a record
run: "By my calculations, in the 24 hours between 1544 on 30 April (07.55N 049.38W)
and 1544 on May 1 (11.55N 053.33W) we ran 334 miles. One further than J-P's best of 333, I
believe. Pete Goss, I seem to recall, wacked in a twenty-four hour run of 315 in Aqua
Quorum during the last Vendee Globe. I'm not sure
what Giovanni's best ever run was in Kodak. It would be interesting to know."
Hopefully this week we can clarify the status of Garside's claims. With a
fleet high speed of 12.8 knots Magellan is not slowing down yet.
Cray Valley is 2nd. After passing
the Leeward Islands J.P. Mouligne says, "After that, it is the last stretch and
also my last chance to catch Mike."
Next is the first of the 40 foot Class II entries, Wind of Change. Wind of Change is 722 miles back. Wind of Change is out of the Doldrums and sailing at 9.7 knots.
www.no-barriers.com is back in 4th place. As reported above No Barriers has a serious problem with food. To compound matters Neal is sailing in the Doldrums at only 3.3 knot.
Shuten Dojhi II is back to 5th place. Shuten lies 1363 miles from 1st place.
Paladin 2 is 1473 miles back.
Balance Bar is back racing and trails the lead boats by 1769 miles.
What does it all mean ?
It will be interesting to see what decision Neal Petersen makes regarding food. With food being such a fundamental item any shortage is a big obstacle to overcome.
