Around Alone Report April 23

Magellan sprouts larger lead over Cray Valley

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

In Class I the top two boats have come closer together.   In Class II the top two have grown farther apart.  In either case neither class leaders position is directly threatened.

Fleet Round Up:

Fila has a lead of 62 miles which is 24 less than yesterday.

Somewhere still trails. Thiercelin has closed, but still needs some weather options with which to attack Fila.

Magellan Alpha leads Class II by 245 miles.  Mike Garside recently crossed his outbound track from Leg 1.  He says, "I've learnt a hell of a lot in the last six months, not the least of which is how to sail my beautiful Finot, Alfie."

Cray Valley is 2nd.  At the very least J.P. Moulgine has stabilized in 2nd.  With his mainsail repair holding and his knee feeling better J.P. says, "So it's back to concentrate on and elaborate various schemes to make up 150 miles in 2 weeks."  Currently Magellan is almost 2 knots faster deepening the hold Cray Valley is in.

Next is the first of the 40 foot Class II entries, Wind of Change.  Wind of Change is 324 miles back.  Viktor Yazykov reports "AFTER TWENTY HOURS HAND-STEERING AVERAGE DURING THREE DAYS IN CALMS, WE HAVE GOT INTO THE TRADE WINDS."  Wind of Change is sailing along nicely at 7.6 knots.

www.no-barriers.com has retaken 4th place and is 684 miles back.

Next is Shuten Dojhi II.   Shuten lies 718 miles from 1st place.

Paladin 2 is 792 miles back.    Neil Hunter says, "Guess it’s going to be another hard day at the office so I had better settle down to it with a good book as we wait for the predicted SE breeze."

Balance Bar is back racing and trails the lead boats by 1465 miles. Brad Van Liew reports: " I am now parked in the high I was trying to avoid and with reduced sail area am having to work pretty hard to keep the boat moving."

What does it all mean ?

None of the fleet should be threatened by heavy air.   Should make for pleasant if not too fast sailing.
