Around Alone Report April 21

Boat and Knee Prooblems

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

Around Alone sailors are again being beset by medical problems.  Cray Valley's J.P. Mouligne has either a staph or strep infection of his knee.  If the infection is the staph type it will form an abscess and Mouligne may have to perform surgery to drain it. If it is the strep type it could spread and cause Mouligne to be evacuated from the boat.  In 24 hours Mouligne will know the type and exact severity of his ailment.

Fleet Round Up:

Fila has a lead of 72 miles which is 24 less than yesterday . Fila is currently .2 knots slower than Somewhere.  However, with his lead Soldini can throttle back and save the boat and still keep his lead.

Somewhere still trails.  Marc Thiercelin is sailing a course of 014 degrees only 2 degrees different than Fila.   So, the boats are essentially in a straight line drag race.  Somewhere's .2 knot speed advantage is not yet a difference maker.

Magellan Alpha leads Class II by 151 miles.  Mike Garside also had a recent medical incident.  In a middle of the nite round up Garside cut his toe.  After consultation with the race medico and a course of antibiotics Garside is able to walk on the toe again.  Mike Garside continue to race hard to add to his lead, "I've not read a word of the five novels I have aboard and I have hardly slept and barely eaten.

Cray Valley is 2nd.  In addition to his possible race ending infection J.P. has a mainsail problem.  He has fallen 151 miles back.  If his knee heels up he will have a tough comeback trail.

Next is the first of the 40 foot Class II entries, Wind of Change.  Wind of Change is 222 miles back and several knots slower than the top two Class II boats.

Next is Shuten Dojhi II.   Shuten lies 498 miles from 1st place. With a fleet low speed of 1.9 knots Shuten is not in a position to move up the standings.

www.no-barriers.com has had several setbacks and is now 507 miles back.  Neal Petersen is having problems generating power and has also lost both autopilots.  With a reported speed of 2.1 knots No Barriers may still be sorting a solution.

Paladin 2 is 602 miles back.   Neil Hunter reports: . "Forecast says the breeze should be SE so I’ve got NE. Par for the course I suppose. At least it is a good steady breeze and were are heading north."

Balance Bar is back racing. Brad Van Liew is still coming to terms with his situation, "I keep telling my brain to smile and realize how fortunate I am to have a shot at attaining my goal of competing in and completing this event."

What does it all mean ?

From the realm of speculation- if J.P. Moulgine does have to drop out due to his knee infection Mike Garside would be in position to win Class II and this Around Alone may have set a record for different ways to not finish a race.
