Around Alone Report March 5

Soldini receives 24 hours for Autissier Rescue

Giovanni Soldini was awarded 24 hours credit to his elapsed time for his diversion to search for and rescue Isabelle Autissier.  A six member international jury met for over 3 hours before making a decision.

This makes Soldini's corrected time for the Leg 24 days 9 hours 55 minutes and 53 seconds.  This raises his record average speed to 10.17 knots.  The average of 10.17 makes this the 4th fastest Around Alone leg when ranked by average speed.  With only a single leg remaining it looks like Christophe Augin will still have sailed the fastest leg ever. He set the record on Leg 2 in 1994 Cape Town to Sydney at an average of 11.2 knots.

His race leading overall time stands at: 89 days 5 hours 35 minutes 27 seconds.  This time puts Soldini on a very favorable pace to set a new race record.  In the last race Class I winner Christophe Augin sailed the Punta Del Este to Charleston Leg in 24 days.  If Soldini would match this record he would have a time of approximately 113 days.  This would be 7 days under Augin's 1990 overall record of 120 days.  With the speed shown by Fila, a new race record is probable.
