Around Alone Report March 20

Paladin2 makes Cape Horn

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

Neil Hunter has become the last of the official Around Alone skippers to round Cape Horn.

Fleet Round Up:

www.no-barriers.com is 471 miles from leg's end.  Neal states: "Late yesterday afternoon the clouds disappeared and the sun came out. The winds went light, but I did not mind as for the first time in weeks, I felt warm again."  Neal's report of light winds are confirmed by a ship observing winds of north by east at force 3.

Next is Shuten Dojhi II.   Shuten lies 804 miles  from the finish.  Shuten is without a full sail inventory and so struggles when the wind is less than a strong breeze.

Paladin 2 comes next 1344 miles   from the finish. Neil describes his Cape Horn rounding: "Well we are finally here. The Cobo de Hornos, Cape Horn, or Horny, or "the rock at the end of the world", is less than 10 miles away looming large to port with the other islands scattered around on the horizon. The sun is coming out and the island looks awesome, like the site of the "One Tree" in Thomas Covenants travels. Moments like this one comes up with weird ideas like building a restaurant on it with attached bed and breakfast and calling it "the restaurant at the end of the universe on the rock at the end of the world". Must talk to the Chilean authorities about it when I get back."

What does it all mean ?

With all official entrants around Cape Horn the safety factor heads upwards and so does the fleet.
