Neal Petersen had opened a sizeable lead on Shuten Dojhi II. Paladin 2 should round Cape Horn within 24 hours.
Fleet Round Up:
www.no-barriers.com is 704 miles from leg's end. Neal has been doing battle with kelp. He describes a recent incident: "I got out my boat hook trying to snag it so that I could drag it free, and promptly my boat hook broke in half with the hook floating off and I unable to retrieve it. I spent two hours maneuvering trying to get free." Reported winds in No Barriers area are: South East by East @ force 4, very fine sailing conditions indded. Neal's ETA to Punta Del Este is Tuesday.
Next is Shuten Dojhi II. Shuten lies 945 miles from the finish. Shuten is without a full sail inventory and so struggles when the wind is less than a strong breeze.
Paladin 2 comes next 1519 from the finish. As Paladin approaches Cape Horn, the winds are increasing: "Looks like the storm down south is a heading this way. I have dropped the main and am proceeding comfortably under storm staysail and a bit of headsail and still making good progress."
What does it all mean ?
This small but happy fleet is nearing completion of 3/4's of Around Alone. Once Paladin2 rounds Cape Horn the worst is behind. Hopes for accomplishing the finish raise greatly.
