Around Alone Report March 16

No Barriers heads remaining fleet

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

3 boats remain racing.  No Barriers leads this trio.  It will be all racing and no finishing for this group until the middle of next week.

Fleet Round Up:

www.no-barriers.com is 1151 miles from leg's end.  No Barriers 24 hour run was 134 miles.  Neal Petersen is dragging his clothes overboard and then air drying them in the cockpit.   Neal comments on his relationship with the remaining boats: "We have become a small community back here, encouraging each other."

Next is Shuten Dojhi II.   Shuten lies 1073 miles  from the finish.  Shuten has suffered some lasting damage.   In a radio conversation with Minoru Saito, Neal Petersen learned: "he has blown out his headsail and his #2 genoa. All the hanks on his staysail are broken. The only sails he has usable is is #1 and the storm tri-sail. He has also damaged his windvane."  Despite this Minoru will not stop for repairs.

Paladin 2 comes next 1771 from the finish.  Paladin's 24 hour run equal 145 miles.  Neil continues to report that all is well.

Also still in the Southern Ocean are former Around Alone boats, Modern University for the Humanities and South Carolina.  MUH should be rounding Cape Horn this week.  Robin Davie is a week out of New Zealand on South Carolina and says, "it's the best weeks sailing i have had out of this boat."

What does it all mean ?

With the problems that Shuten has, No Barriers should be the next boat to Punta Del Este.
