Around Alone Report March 15

Somewhere finishes

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

Somewhere has finally become the 2nd Class II boat to finish Leg 3.  The delay is due to a dismasting and subsequent layover in the Falkland Islands.  In the end Somewhere posted a Leg time of 37 days 7 hours 19 minutes and 57 seconds an average of 6.66.

So, although dissapointing Somewhere will step a new carbon rig and be ready for Leg 3.  Although improbable that Somewhere can outsail Fila by enough to win the race, Thiercelin can sail for his first leg victory.

Fleet Round Up:

Next is Shuten Dojhi II.   Shuten lies 1141miles  from the finish.  Shuten skippered by Japenese sailor Minoru Saito has rounded Cape Horn for the 3rd time.  Of the rounding, Minoru says, "I had smooth rounding on 3rd, that this time has no much winds, no rough sea not so cold, among the 3times."  So, for Minoru his 3rd Cape Horn rounding was a charm in that the conditions were pretty easy."  Further, Minoru indicated problems with a ripped mainsail.

Next is www.no-barriers.com.  Neal Petersen is 1151 miles from leg's end.  Neal rounded Cape Horn early Saturday.   Upon rounding he said: Now here this morning, at first light, I look upon the land that has been my 17 year old dream. I am 31 years old, and everything I have dreamt of, I have achieved."  Soon after this Neal said No Barriers was becalmed for 2 hours at Cape Horn.  Neal described his setting as he sat near Cape Horn: . "I could see the sun on the tall peaks of Cape Horn, but on the slopes closest to me, there was not one single tree. The only form of habitation was the lighthouse."  No Barriers continues to close on Shuten, at this point there is only 10 miles between the boats.   Neither boat is at full song due to damage, but they should spend the next week racing up the South American continent.

Paladin 2 comes next 1916 from the finish.
