Around Alone Report March 12

No Barriers survives multiple knockdowns

Neal Petersen had sailed No Barriers almost all the way to Cape Horn.  He'd had no serious incidents.  Then as he reported in a recent e-mail he took a total of 12 knockdowns.  During this his main ripped.  Up to 12 inches of water flooded the cabin.  Even under bare poles he reached 15 knots.   This occurred during a low pressure system when the barometer reading of 982 mb.  

In his next e-mail Neal reported, "I have been able to get the boat underway again....  I have not been able to put the boat back together yet."  During the storm Neal says, "Last night frightened me. Even though I was harnessed on, the waves were trying to drown me in the cockpit."   

Fleet Round Up:

Somewhere is 299 miles from the finish.  Somewhere has made a 24 hour run of 208 miles.  Somewhere is expected to arrive Punta Del Este by Sunday.

Next is Shuten Dojhi II.   Shuten lies 1396 from the finish.  Shuten had a 24 hour run of 139 miles 20 better than the day before. 

Next is www.no-barriers.com.  Neal Petersen is 1660 miles from leg's end having completed a 151 mile 24 hour run in full on gale conditions. At last report Neal had No Barriers back underway.  Speed was 5.7 knots on a course of 129.  No Barriers should round Cape Horn this weekend.

Paladin 2 comes next 2291 from the finish.  This gives Paladin a 304 mile run in the last 24 hours. Neil Hunter is sailing in better winds, "From calms to 30 kts as I type this."

What does it all mean ?

This weekend will see Shuten and No Barriers round Cape Horn and Somewhere finish.  Theoretically three more boats will be out of, or on their way out of the Southern Ocean.
