Around Alone Report March 11

Wind of Change again 4th

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

Four boats have now finished in Class II, with the 40 footer Wind Of Change being the 4th.  Wind of Change sailed Leg 3 in a time of 32 days 18 hours 57 minutes and 20 seconds an average speed of 7.57.  Wind of Change was again the first 40 footer to finish, as with the other 2 legs.

Upon docking after a challenging leg, Viktor Yazykov said: "Everything that happened on the race is so interesting, just more experience, The best school of life, I would say."

Fleet Round Up:

Somewhere is 507 miles from the finish.  Somewhere has made a 24 hour run of 288 miles. This is an average of 12 knots, remarkable considering Somewhere is sailing with a sail array of a 1 reefed main and staysail. This good speed has continued as at last report Somewhere showed 15 knots of speed.  Even though Somewhere is faster, a finish is not expected until Sunday.

Next is Shuten Dojhi II.   Shuten lies 1535 from the finish.  Shuten had a 24 hour run of 119 miles.

Next is www.no-barriers.com.  Neal Petersen is 1660 miles from leg's end having completed a 133 mile 24 hour run. Neal has affected genoa repairs, and again No Barriers has a full genoa. Even during the hard job of sewing his sail in freezing conditions Neal stayed positive: "Here I am, close to Cape Horn, living my dream"  he thought.  Reported wind conditions near No Barriers are North North West at 30 + knots, so No Barriers should show a good 24 hour run tomorrow.

Paladin 2 comes next 2595 from the finish.  This gives Paladin a 116 mile run in the last 24 hours. Although not making the progress he desires, Neil says: "Apart from the frustrating wind conditions the weather has been very pleasant and not too cold. Even a bit of sun this morning and a few stars last night."

From Modern University for the Humanities Fedor Konioukhov reports in.  His position is 52 degrees south 108 degrees west.   Things seem pretty peaceful and Fedor says, "I even have time to read a book about artist Salvador Dali"  MUH is no longer racing, but Fedor is completing his 3rd solo circumnavigation.  South Carolina is also finishing the course unofficially.

What does it all mean ?

As Viktor Yazykov sailed the leg he developed this motto: "Be always aware."  Good advice for himself and for his class II competitors on Leg 4.  They should be aware or Viktor will break up their 1-2-3 finishing pattern.
