Around Alone Report March 9

Somewhere returns to race

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

Class I is now a two boat race again.  Somewhere has left the Falkland Islands and is again racing.  Somewhere won't reach Punta Del Este for at least a week.  The next finisher will be the first 40 foot boat across the line in the form of Wind of Change.

Fleet Round Up:

Closest to finishing is Wind of Change.  Wind of Change is 244 miles from the finish line. Reported conditions in Wind of Changes area are north north west winds at 10 knots.  With a course of 015 degrees Wind of Change is sailing upwind and making a fine speed of 7.7 knots.

Somewhere is 876 miles from the finish.  Somewhere is steering 006 degrees and making a speed of 3.6 knots.   Somewhere's finish line ETA is early next week.

Next is Shuten Dojhi II.   Shuten lies 11780 from the finish.  Shuten is sailing a course of 075 degrees at 7.8 knots.

Next is www.no-barriers.com.  Neal Petersen is 1918 miles from leg's end.  No Barriers 24 hour run was 166 miles. Indeed Neal says, "Conditions have been ideal for being down here this far south."  As has been the pattern Neal begins to think of catching Shuten Dojhi as the leg moves on saying, "I am holding my own again Minuro still, and hope to close the gap."

Paladin 2 comes next 2807 from the finish. Neil Hunter reports all O.K, except,m "Quite frustrating in a sense when the leading Class II yachts are just now finishing."

South Carolina has finally left Auckland as an unofficial competitor. Robin Davie puts his plans this way: "sail for Cape Horn, Punta del Este, and finally back to Charleston next may. We will complete our third circumnavigation, - THE THIRD TIME AROUND."

What does it all mean ?

Somewhere's reentry means that Fila can't be assured of victory until the finish line in Charleston.  And with the high level of Class I dropouts nothing will be certain until the finish.  The Class I game is still on.
