After the 30 January deadline was missed Modern University for the Humanities officially withdrew. South Carolina continued to sail hoping to be allowed to continue.
Fleet Round Up:
Modern University for the Humanities will continue her sailing circumnaviagtion. However, MUH will no longer be racing. Skipper Fedor Konioukhov will continue on, but more as a cruiser than racer. Konioukhov hopes to leave Auckland February 10th and sail the remainder of the race course. Race sponsor COMSAT will provide safety and communications equipment. Look for periodic reports on Modern University for the Humanities progress.
South Carolina has 502 miles left of Leg 2. South Carolina has asked for an exemption under the extraordinary circumstances clause of race rules. The deadline can be waved if extraordinary circumstances prevent a yacht from finishing in time. Race officials will not make a decision until South Carolina reaches Auckland, in around one weeks time. South Carolina was making fine progres- 9.9 knots at last report.
What does it all mean ?
Modern University for the Humanities and South Carolina may sail Leg 3, but it will not be as official competitors. We will keep posting reports on these yachts. A reminder Leg 3 from Auckland to Punta Del Este Uruguay and via Cape Horn starts Saturday and we will have daily reports.
