Around Alone Report January 26

No Barriers and Shuten will finish today

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

Fleet Round Up:

Shuten Dojhi II is a scant 31 miles from finishing.  Shuten sailed  83 miles towards Auckland in the last 24 hours.   Today will bring to a close skipper Minouro Saito's 3rd Around Alone Leg 2.

www.no-barriers.com is now just 54 miles from the end of Leg 2. In the last 24 hours No Barriers has posted a 24 hour run of 76 miles.  It seems as though No Barriers will finish behind Shuten Dojhi II.   Neal Petersen describes his recent sailing this way: "It was a ghastly night last night, with the winds blowing 35 to 40 knots and a huge sea."   At the 24 hour to go mark, Neal comments: " I have one orange left and
one bar of chocolate. There are other foods, but they don't count on my list of favourites." The finish will mean that Neal Petersen and No Barriers have completed Leg 2.  In 1994 Neal was dismasted on this leg and did not finish Leg 2.

Neil Hunter is next on Paladin 2, 240 miles from Auckland.  Paladin's 24 hour run: 53 miles. Neil Hunter says: "I am still beating and about 40 degrees off course, but the breeze has dropped and the seas have calmed. All in all very peasant sailing but for the course."

South Carolina has 1396 miles left of Leg 2.  South Carolina's 24 hour run: a mere 32 miles.  Robin Davie sums up his present situation:"With the wind, or airs, having switched from west to east, one can reasonably hope that SC is getting to the northern side of the high pressure area, and that winds will stiffen up and get us going again in the next 24 hours."

Of the 5 boats still racing, one is Class I's Modern University for the Humanities. MUH  is 517 miles from the finish, but still may face disqualification for missing a waypoint.

What does it all mean ?

Shuten and No Barriers are another of this Around Alone's pairs.   Leg 1 saw No Barriers finish before Shuten.  This leg sees a reversal.   Just like another Class II pair, Balance Bar and Magellan Alpha and Class I's PRB and Somewhere these two seem to find each other out on the open ocean.
