Around Alone Report January 20

Shuten Dojhi II retakes lead from No Barriers

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

Recently Shuten Dojhi II and No Barriers have been travelling almost in a water borne convoy.  No more, as Shuten has worked out a 38 mile lead.

Fleet Round Up:

Shuten Dojhi II 504 miles from finishing.  Shuten sailed  118 miles towards Auckland in the last 24 hours.   More importantly this effort has Shuten 38 miles up on No Barriers.    Shuten is sailing at 7.5 knots, .5 more than No Barriers.  Past experiences say now that the wind is up Shuten can be expected to lengthen her lead.

www.no-barriers.com 542 miles from the end of Leg 2 is now the lead boat.  In the last 24 hours No Barriers has posted a 24 hour run of 80 miles.   Neal Petersen reports, "I had the worst 24-hour run of this race. I made a whopping, hold onto your seats, 56 miles."  Still, Neal has several days to catch Shuten Dojhi yet again.

Neil Hunter is next on Paladin 2, 793 miles from Auckland, sailing at 6.6 knots.  Paladin's 24 hour run: 161 miles, best in the fleet.   Neil reports: "Yesterday was a dismal day weather wise with depressing grey clouds that rained pretty well non stop."

South Carolina has 1749 miles left of Leg 2.  South Carolina's 24 hour run: 146 miles.  Despite this her ETA is still 3 February.  This is after the 30 January deadline that South Carolina must make to sail Leg 3.

Of the 5 boats still racing, one is Class I's Modern University for the Humanities. MUH  is 1023 miles from the finish, but still may face disqualification for missing a waypoint.

What does it all mean ?

We will see if No Barriers can once more close on Shuten to produce another photo finish.  Also, please see Torresen Sailing Site's coverage of Key West Race Week.
