Around Alone Report January 19

No Barriers and Shuten Dojhi II within 1 mile

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

www.no-barriers.com is now merely 1 mile ahead of Shuten Dojhi II.  Their race to Auckland continues in close, but slow, fashion.

Fleet Round Up:

www.no-barriers.com 683 miles from the end of Leg 2 is now the lead boat.  In the last 24 hours No Barriers has posted a 24 hour run of 60 miles.  Currently No Barriers is sailing at .9 knots. Neal Petersen reports, "I am trying to rest now, so that I can push when we get wind. In the winds under 10 knots from ahead, I can hold him off. Likewise with winds up to 12 knots from astern when I can carry a spinnaker."  Right now, the boats are almost even.  Still, the ultra low speeds indicate the light conditions which Neal feels he has an advantage in.

Shuten Dojhi II 684 miles from finishing.  Shuten sailed  66 miles towards Auckland in the last 24 hours gaining back 6 miles on No Barriers.  At last report she was sailing at .8 knots.   As Shuten and No Barriers are within .1 knots of boat speed, this close race will continue.

Neil Hunter is next on Paladin 2, 1105 miles fro Auckland, sailing at 5.5 knots.  Recently Neil has been affected by the light conditions in the Tasman Sea.  At one point he reported: "I am totally becalmed so have dropped all sail to stop them flogging to death and am going nowhere."

South Carolina has 2030 miles left of Leg 2.  .  South Carolina's ETA is still 3 February.  Lately it has been either too much wind, or not enough leaving Robin Davie to say: "Our speed remains well down, a reflection on the lightening wind, and the necessity to keep the speed controllable in the squalls which means going slow in the  lighter winds in-between."  Robin writes confidently of sailing Leg 3 saying in part: "a lot of work in a short time will have to be done to get SC ready for the next leg start on February 6th  to Uruguay via Cape Horn."

Of the 5 boats still racing, one is Class I's Modern University for the Humanities. MUH  is 1383 miles from the finish, but still may face disqualification for missing a waypoint.

What does it all mean ?

Looks as if Shuten and No Barriers are parked.   Perhaps one will be the recipient of a private breeze and pull away. Also, please see Torresen Sailing Site's coverage of Key West Race Week.
