Around Alone Report January 17

No Barriers overtakes Shuten Dojhi II & suffers minor damage in collision

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

Neal Petersen's end of the leg push has paid off.   Latest reports shows No Barriers with a 9 mile edge.

Fleet Round Up:

www.no-barriers.com 854 miles from the end of Leg 2 is now the lead boat.  In the last 24 hours No Barriers has posted a 24 hour run of 106 miles.  Currently No Barriers is sailing at only 2.9 knots, indicating light air.  However, No Barriers has recently collided with a floating object.  It halted the boat, although No Barriers was moving at 6 to 7 knots.  Neal Petersen reports, " I have survey the boat as best as I can in the dark and can see no evidence of damage. I will continue sailing and re-survey the boat at first light. I do not appear to be in any danger."  After taking a look Neal reported, "At the water line on the bow is a bit missing. Whatever I hit was a large solid object. I am taking some water, but conditions are very calm and the flow is minimal."

Shuten Dojhi II 863miles from finishing.  Shuten sailed  87 miles towards Auckland in the last 24 hours.  At last report she was sailing at 1.8 knots.

Neil Hunter is next on Paladin 2, 1322 miles fro Auckland, making his 24 hour run 84 miles.

South Carolina has 2331 miles left of Leg 2.  Robin Davie has covered 133 miles in the last 24 hours.  South Carolina's ETA is still 3 February.  South Carolina needs to speed up as the deadline is 30 January.

Of the 5 boats still racing, one is Class I's Modern University for the Humanities. MUH  is 1665miles from the finish, but still may face disqualification for missing a waypoint.

What does it all mean ?

Assuming No Barriers did not suffer damage in her collision, Neal Petersen now has a lead to grow and protect.  Neal's present ETA is 23 January, so he will have about another week to do this job of staying in the lead.
