Around Alone Report January 14

Modern University for the Humanities misses waypoint

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

5 boats are still racing. Yet to be determined is whether Modern University for the Humanities will turn back and properly round the waypoint. If Fedor Konioukhov does not, it seems he will be disqualified.

Fleet Round Up:

Of the 5 boats still racing, one is Class I's Modern University for the Humanities. MUH  is 2167 miles from the finish.   MUH's distance sailed towards the finish in the last 24 hours: 174 miles.   In an e-mail realyed by shore crew, Fedor descibes problems he faced that caused him to miss the waypoint: "As he ran out of power his 2 main GPS (one above the chart table) and (one in the pilothouse) are disabled, and he uses small, portable GPS GARMIN with his own power which sometimes shows not enough satellites on its display in this area."  So far, race officials have given no indication that they will take such factors into consideration.

The first Class II boat is now Shuten Dojhi II 1162 miles from finishing. Shuten Dojhi's 24 hour run works out to 172 miles.

Next is www.no-barriers.com 1267 miles from the end of Leg 2.  No Barriers has posted  a 24 hour run of 138 miles.  Neal Petersen is pushing himself hard to overtake Shuten Dojhi II, "I grabbed a box of cookies, a drink and headed back on deck and helmed another 6 hours. Every muscle is hurting in my torso. I had 3 reefs in the main and some genoa. I was flying along. Then I had to gybe. Waited 30 min for a lull in the wind, and gybed. Set up and pushed again."  As he pushed on Neal thought, "Each time I surfed over 10 knots, which was almost every 5 min, I would think, one more boat length reeled in on Minoru."

Neil Hunter is next on Paladin 2, 1692 miles fro Auckland.   This indicates 129 miles in the last 24 hours for Paladin.  Neil is making progress and comments, "1000 (and a bit) to go and should be around the bottom of Tassie at the weekend in my home waters."  Neil sailed Paladin to Charleston for the start, and now will pass through racing.  One would imagaine he might complete a similar voyage upon finishing the race.

South Carolina has 2882 miles left of Leg 2. South Carolina's 24 hour run was 182 miles best in the fleet.  On board South Carolina, "The winds have remained up around 35 knots all day, the bear has been the squalls, with many of them coming thro at 50 knots plus, and that ain't fun."

What does it all mean ?

There have been no reports that MUH will be allowed to stay in the race.  On a good note, it seems as though Robin Davie and South Carolina are moving along and may make the Leg 3 deadline.
