Around Alone Report January 13

Modern University for the Humanities misses waypoint

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

The last Class I boat Racing, Modern University for the Humanities has failed to round a required waypoint to the west of Australia.  The penalty for failing to do comes in the form of a choice.  Either disqualification from Leg 2 or from the entire race.  Fedor Konioukhov can still correct this error, but it is not clear if he plans to do so.

Fleet Round Up:

Of the 5 boats still racing, one is Class I's Modern University for the Humanities. MUH  is 2341 miles from the finish.   MUH's distance sailed towards the finish in the last 24 hours: 175 miles.   Still, any progress made is jeporadized by failure to properly sail the course.

The first Class II boat is now Shuten Dojhi II 1334 miles from finishing. Shuten Dojhi's 24 hour run works out to 154 miles.

Next is www.no-barriers.com 1405 miles from the end of Leg 2.  No Barriers has posted a 13 mile gain on Shuten, with a 24 hour run of 167 miles.  Neal Petersen is pushing himself hard to overtake Shuten Dojhi II, "Today I got my favorite supplies out and accessable. I have spent about 5 hours helming, so for each couple of hours helming I am going reward myself in some ways. Today it was a bar of chocolate, a soft drink and custard."  So far, it's working.

Neil Hunter is next on Paladin 2, 1821 miles fro Auckland.   This indicates 175 miles in the last 24 hours for Paladin, 2nd best in the fleet.  Neil has been in heavy weather and has learned, "Interesting trying to hold a bowl of food while trying to eat it with the severe rocking motion. Luckily haven’t spilt too much."

South Carolina has 3004 miles left of Leg 2. South Carolina's 24 hour run was 188 miles best in the fleet.   Seems as though despite problems, Robin Davie is keeping South Carolina moving.

What does it all mean ?

From the 24 hour figures, onc can deduce that the best breeze is with the last two boats.  One can also see that Neal Petersen's end of the leg push is beginning to real in Shuten Dojhi.  Finally, Modern University for the Humanities must come correct or be put out of the race.
