Around Alone Report January 11

Wind of Change is 1st 40 footer to finish

Please consult The Around Alone Report Users Guide for an explanation of this report.

Minus the drama that accompanied Victory Yazykov and Wind of Change on Leg One this duo completed a solid Leg 2 showing.  The 40 foot Wind of Change sailed Leg 2 in 36 days 0 hours 16 minutes and 0 seconds, an average speed of 7.97.

Fleet Round Up:

The last  Class I boat racing  is Modern University for the Humanities which is 3003 miles from the finish.

Wind of Change, a solid, but not trouble free leg.  For one, Viktor Yazykov lost all of his communication equipment.   Due to this, Viktor "didn't have any news or hear anything about other boats." and was quite surprised with his finish.  His second major problem was autopilots which lacked the power to control Wind of Change in heavy weather.  This led to many unplanned gybes.  Still, Viktory pushed the 50 footers and looks like a podium threat in the remaining legs.

5th is now Shuten Dojhi II 1655 miles from finishing. Shuten Dojhi's 24 hour run works out to 153 miles.

6th is www.no-barriers.com 1748 miles from the end of Leg 2.  No Barriers has posted a slight gain, with a 24 hour run of 159 miles.  While taking his mainsail down in a gale, "I got thoroughly soaked. With no heater, it is proving hard to get warm, let alone dry. I am shivering, climbed into my sleeping bag to try and conserve what body heat I can."

South Carolina has 3327 miles left of Leg 2. South Carolina's 24 hour run was 122 miles.   Robin Davie has been gale sailing, "Overnight, with gale force 35 to 40 knot southwesterlies we ended up with 3 separate gybes, each time being laid over on our beam end with the waterballast on the wrong side to leeward, and SC rounding up to weather heading into the gale." Also, Robin's autopilot has acted up.   No worries, he has set up his Monitor Wind Vane and South Carolina sails on.

What does it all mean ?

With Wind of Change we'll a have a gap in the finishing order.  Still, races exist. Can No Barriers overtake Shuten Dojhi II ?  Can South Carolina finish by the 30 January deadline.  Keep checking for daily updates.
