Around Alone Report for November 23

2 Still Good to go for Leg 2

Within 24 hours Robin Davies rudderless South Carolina should finish Leg 1 in Cape Town.  Currently South Carolina is making 5.4 knots towards Cape Town and a needed refit.

South Carolina's progress sans rudder is rather halting.  Robin Davie describes it thus: "I'm not sure  racing is quite the word to describe a rudderless boat in a  hurry.  Its almost more like "in-between races" - we were racing - and we will  be racing again when we leave  Capetown for Auckland. But maybe we are racing to get to the race...."   Indeed Robin will make the 28 November deadline, to be able to race Leg 2.

Next up in the order is Paladin 2.  Neil Hunter's 40 footer has maintained good pace and has an ETA of 0156 on 28 November.   Neil reported that: "The breeze is starting to pick up as the next big front approaches."  This steady breeze is reflected in his 6.9 knot boat speed highest of the 3 yachts still racing.

The 3rd yacht is Modern University for the Humanities.   MUH is 703 miles from Cape Town with a too late ETA of 29 November.  Currently MUH is sailing at 4.5 knots.  Skipper Fedor Konioukhov needs to coat around 5.3 knots out his yacht to make the November 28th deadline.  As Modern University for the Humanities is a 60 footer, this should be no problem provided Fedor finds breeze.  Perhaps Fedor will find needed wind in a cold front that is moving towards Cape Town.  The fleet weather forecast describes this front as follows :"Ride this front for everything it is worth, but remember, the winds and seas will be rugged!!!"  Could be just what MUH needs !
