Around Alone Report for November 19

ETA's Drop

At the rear of the still racing Around Alone yachts is Modern University for the Humanities.  It is doubtful whether this 60 footer will reach Cape Town before the deadline of November 28th.  If MUH doesn't make it, she will not be allowed to compete in Leg 2.

Still, Modern University for the Humanities skipper Fedor Konioukhov is pushing to make it.  He reports: "I am carrying now all the sails, except spinnaker. No time to speak, no time to cook. I have to steer and work with sails all the time."  So, under main, staysail and fuller genoa MUH is pushing to make the deadline.

Ahead of MUH is the Australian 40 footer Paladin 2Paladin 2 is also racing against the Leg 2 deadline.   Neil's current projected ETA is 0014 November 29.  That's only 14 minutes outside the for the deadline window.  Paladin 2 has a real chance to make Leg 2.

Next up is Robin Davies rudderless South Carolina.  Robin is expected to finish Sunday.  South Carolina has another 433 miles to sail to Cape Town.  In the light airs, without a rudder Robin has his hands full.  He states: "It can take 20 or 30 minutes to persuade   the rudderless SC in a light air calm that  she wants to come around and point   towards Capetown, she wont drift  through a gybe, or head to wind thro  a tack, but once pointing in the right  direction, it will only take her seconds   to fall away onto the wrong tack or  direction - its like an errant puppy that   wants to take a dive towards every tree it see's."

Robin reports that his replacement rudder is being constructed and that he has procured some used sails for South Carolina.   However, he still needs help in funding.  To help him out please visit his website

Leading the remaining fleet is Shuten Dojhi II.   Currently only 250 miles separate her from Cape Town.  Finish is expected on Saturday.

So of the remaining 4 two will make the deadline.   The other 2 we will continue to watch as they race to Cape Town right up against the deadline.
