Around Alone Report for November 8

7 Boats Still Racing

The leader of the 7 boats is Rapscallion III, 1041 miles from Cape Town.  Next is South Carolina, 1309 miles from the finish and a needed refit.  From the Atlantic Robin reminds folks that details on 'Robin's Rudder Fund' are on the South Carolina website.  If you would like to make a contribution stop by.

Next in the fleet, is the first 40 footer Wind Of ChangeWind of Change has 1406 miles to sail to Cape Town.  Viktor Yazykov reports from Wind of Change: "HAVE SPENT ALL DAY UP ON THE MAST. IT IS BETTER NOW.KEEP REDUSED SAILS."  The reason for being up the mast ?  A failed port diagonal shroud.

Next in line, is www.no-barriers.com.   Neal Petersen has been sailing No Barriers in gale force winds and so: "We have set a new passage record of 186 miles in the last 24 hours."  Wind of Change and www.no-barriers should have a close race to Cape Town for the '40 footer Cup'.

Shuten Dojhi II comes next 1646 miles back, followed by Paladin 2 2324 miles back.

The last boat in the fleet is the Class I entry Modern University for the Humanities, 2485 miles from Cape Town.  It must now be questioned whether MUH will sail Leg 2.  The reason being, that all entries have to be in Cape Town 1 week (168 hours) before the Leg 2 start.  Currently MUH's ETA is 29 November, 4 days too late. MUH skipper Fedor  Konioukhov expects to reach Cape Town 25 November.  If he does miss the deadline, he plans to sail Leg 2 as an unofficial competitor.  It will be interesting to see if Modern University for the Humanities makes it.
