At 0400 GMT Robin Davie sent the following message to to the Charleston South Carolina based race operations center: "Lost rudder. No assistance necessary. Tell my friends I am sailing on to Cape Town." At this point Davie is 2364 miles from the finish line. This is similar to his dismasting in the 1994 Around Alone. This incident occurred in the Southern Ocean over 2,000 miles from land. Davie lashed together a jury rig of spinnaker poles and finished the leg. This is a long voyage for a rudderless yacht and Davie will need to draw on experience and ingenuity to make it to Cape Town.
