With two days to the start of the 1998-99 Around Alone race the fleet is now complete.
Wednesday nite saw both of the remaining entries arrive in Charleston. From early afternoon on we were kept updated and Robin Davie's progress. He was expected around 1800. As it always seems, it took longer than expected. So, as the crowd stood and watched and the PA announcer told us to cheer for Robin and South Carolina, Viktor Yazykov and Wind of Change Russia arrived. This yacht had been out of contact due to electrical problems. Viktor last realyed his position through commercial shipping when 800 miles out. So, much to everyone's surprise it was Wind of Change and not South Carolina. Viktor was greeted on the dock by his countrymen from Modern University for the Humanities.
Several hours later, Robin Davie and his crew pulled in with South Carolina. Robin certainaly got his cheers then ! It can now be said that Robin has finished his 2,000 mile qualifying voyage. Preperations continue in Charleston. Skippers and key support crew attended a briefing about various safety matters. In this afternoon's report I will take a look at the weather conditions the fleet can expect at the start.
