Overcast skies continue in Charleston. Preparations of all kinds continue.
Neil Hunter's quest for a mast continues. Neil and a companion left for West Palm Beach Florida to pick up the mast. They are expected back today. The mast is in a nearly completed state with standing rigging installed. Neil and his team must run halyards, step and tune the mast. Hopefully this will allow Neil to be sailing on Thursday. In many ways Neil shows the tremendous spirit and desire that these sailors have. Step and tune the mast and two days later start an around the world race.
Meanwhile as I glance over my shoulder I see Class I entries PRB and Group 4 heading out to sail. Group 4 seems a bit behind the curve on development. When I asked them last night how Tuesday's training sail went, Group 4 said: "not long enough." Here's hoping that today's sail helps them progress.
Mike Garside's Magellan Alpha has had boom put back on. Turns out the boom was 3 inches too long. After much teeth gnashing it seems as though all is well. The boom was put back on this morning and the mainsail hoisted.
Each sport or activity has its costume. At the Around Alone Start in Charleston it is the 'multi tool' that is ubiquitous. From leatherman to buck to SOG and on most if not all folks have a tool on their belt in a black nylon holster. Here's an idea for future Around Alone's: Around Alone One Man One Boat, One Tool - sponsored by whatever tool maker wants to pony up.
Other scattered observations: French sailor Isabelle Autissier had as at least I didn't expect, a hot dog for lunch. Not what one might expect from a French sailor.
q The Torresen Sailing Site sponsored Modern University for the Humanities continue to ready for the race. MUH is sporting fast looking new sails. These sails were made by North Sails Canada. Tonight MUH will be christened in a dockside ceremony, and MUH will sport www.torresen.com graphics on her boom. Please check back throughout the 27,000 mile Around Alone race for updates on Fedor!
