Torresen Sailing Site Report From Charleston SC for: The Afternoon of September 21st

After my day long drive to Charleston I am beginning to settle in and get a feel for the event. The most notable aspect is the pronounced international character of this event. Amongst others I have seen French, Russian, English and Italian folks. Quite different than most regattas I go to.

This morning I finally met Fedor Konioukhov of Modern University for the Humanities. Torresen Sailing Site is a sponsor of this Around Alone effort. Fedor's boat is in better shape than I expected. Considering that during his Atlantic crossing, Fedor sailed through a hurricane Modern University for the Humanities looks well. As soon as 'MUH' gets tidied up, the Torresen Sailing Site logo (www.torresen.com) will be affixed to the hull. Tommorow I will offer a more in depth report on Fedor and MUH.

Most of the fleet is ready, but not all done preparing. On board No Barriers, installation of the satellite phone is one of the final tasks. Two of the busier boats are Magellan (which is in the process of fixing its boom) & Gartmore Investments which continues mast work. Whether coincidence or not, it seems as though the British boats that are designed by the French Finot firm are having more trouble than Finot's French customers. It's probably just coincidence, but it has the dock talking.

On Tuesday, I will report on the differnces in the new Finot 60's. These are skippered by Hall, Soldini, Golding and Thiercelin. Although similar in hull design, there are differnces and deck and in the rig. I will try to explain and explore these differences. Also, Tuesday will see more information on Fedor Konioukhov and Modern University for the Humanities.
