First things first. Driving to Charleston took 17 hours and is roughly 900 miles. True, I was by myself. And true the AC wasn't on all that much. However, in no way does it compare to what I am here to cover- sailors, one of them on a boat, around the world for 27,000 miles. Just thinking about that put me in my place.
As I cover the race I am staying on board one of the entered yachts - No Barriers. At about 0400 I was awoken by a piercing scream. Somehow the Satcom machine had gone off. Trust me - when this same alarm goes off at sea, the sailors will hear it.
In the somethings never change category- as I arrived, Class I entry Gartmore Investments was tying up. They are on a wall nearest the harbor traffic. True to form, here comes a power boat at full throttle about 10 feet from Gartmore. I guess no matter the size of the event, somethings never change. At this point all boats are in the harbor, with the exception of Wind of Change and South Carolina. Please check back for this afternoon's report.
