Around Alone News

New Stopover?

It has already been annoucned that Around Alone will start from Newport RI as it did from 1982-1990.  Now comes word that there could be another new port for Around Alone 2002-2003.

Originally it was expected that the 1st Southern Ocean leg would end in either Auckland or Wellington New Zealand.  However, Around Alone would be in Auckland while America's Cup trials were underway setting up a conflict.

Now reports from New Zealand indicate that Tauranga, New Zealand is making a bid.  Tauranga is 200 miles east of Auckland on New Zealand's north island.  Other cities being considered are Melbourne and Sydney Australia. Melbourne recently played host to the record breaking Great American II. Sydney was a stop over from 1982 to 1994.  Melbourne and Tauranga would be new ports for Around Alone.
