Sunday saw the final race of the One Design 35 Championships. The race started in a 6 to 8 knot northwesterly. There was a mid race 15 degree shift. The boats finished in a tight pack. The winner of the last race was Avalanche.
The race committee attempted to start another race. However, the wind never did fill in and at 1340 the 12 boat fleet headed in.
After 7 races, Roxanne is the first ever national champion with finishes of 1-1-3-1-1-2-4 for 13 points. Second was Excalibur with 29 points, followed by Heartbreaker with 34 points.
Race 4 of the One Design 35 nationals was sailed in light air of 8 knots. On the 3rd leg the right side of the course paid heavily and those who were there benefited from the better right side pressure. Roxanne took her 3rd bullet in 4 races.
Race 5 had similar light air, with .75 long legs instead of 1 mile. Midway through the race the wind shifted from northwest to south. The Race Committee handled this shift by re-orienting the beats 110 degrees. Again Roxanne was first.
Race 6 was sailed in 10 knots of steady breeze, with shorts and T shirts conditions to boot ! Excalibur took 1st place in this race.
Roxanne's 4 wins in 6 races give her a very solid 1st place.
Friday was the first day of racing, where the finishes counted. Keep in mind that no throwouts are allowed. Race 1 saw 15 knots of breeze from the NNW. The course was a 4 leg windward/leeward with 1.5 mile legs. Roxanne began the regatta by winning this race. This was a sign of things to come as Roxanne leads after day 1.
Race 2 utilized the same course. Two boats were over the line early and could not recover in this closely matched fleet. Roxanne again was the winner.
Race 3 saw the course lengthened to 5 legs. In this race the shifts were bigger, as much as 30 degrees. This resulted in a lot of place swapping. For the first time, Roxanne was not the winner as Avalanche took the 1st place gun for this race.
After the first day of racing, and 3 of the 8 scheduled races, Roxanne has a 9 point lead over 2nd place Excalibur. Again, there are no throwouts, to consistency will win the regatta. With the majority of races still to be sailed, many of the boats are still in contention.
Thanks to Annapolis Yacht Club for an excellent job in getting information on this regatta out in a timely fashion. Check back tomorrow for more One Design 35 nationals coverage.
